To My Grown Up Son

My hands were busy through the day,
I didn't have much time to play
The little games you asked me to
I didn't have much time for you.

I'd wash your clothes;I'd sew and cook
But when you'd bring your picture book
And ask me please,to share your fun,
I'd say,"A little later,son."

I'd tuck you in all safe at night,
And hear your prayers, turn out the light,
Then tiptoe softly to the door,
I wish I'd stayed a minute more.

For life is short, and years rush past,
A little boy grows up so fast,
No longer is he at your side,
His precious secrets to confide.

The picture books are put away,
There are no children's games to play,
No goodnight kiss,no prayers to hear,
That all belongs to yesteryear.

My hands once busy, now lie still,
The days are long and hard to fill,
I wish I might go back and do,
The little things you asked me to.

  1. I just love this poem.Coming as it does from an unknown mother in a far-away land;it still resonates strongly with me.

  10. Wonderful poem Indu jee. I am working and my wife is a great home maker. We have a little baby in the cradle right now at home and I keep telling my wife to get time away from the normal, washing, keeping utensils properly, keeping clothes in a proper manner, etc etc so many of the tasks at home and to spend that time in a qualitative manner with our little bundle of joy. This poem by a distant mother is so apt.
And am not saying only she, I also need to do better from that perspective, so as not to think later, I wish....

    I loved it. Thanks!!!

    1. Hi Sampad.Welcome here.I am no poet, but sometimes when my emotions surge,a few lines come slipping out.To me,a poem should be such, the reader can understand it,and of course if it rhymes, all the better. This is only my personal choice.
Thank you for this lovely appreciation.
