HOMECOMING ?

Nostalgia
Thy name is pain.
What once was,
Can never be,
The same again!
I longed to go,
To the old abodes,
Of my childhood's years,
My heart beating fast,
Holding back my tears,
Go i did,
After two score years.
My childhood was strewn,
All over there,
Pristine joy,never a care.
But nothing at all,
Was as it had been,
A sweeping hand,
Had changed the scene.
I could not find,
Though fresh in mind,
A trace of what,
Had been pulling at me.
Where was the house?
The park,the swings?
With passage of time,
They had taken wings.
The land was same,
Living and throbbing,
Why did my heart,
Feel like sobbing ?

  1. A very heartwarming poem on nostalgia and change. Change is inevitable and in such a scenario, fond memories remain our only treasures that we can cherish for all the years to come.

  2. That is so sad, Indu. True, things, places and even people are not the same when we meet them after many years. Agreed that change is inevitable and we are all not celebrities to have our childhood homes and surroundings preserved, but when we are face to face with reality, it hurts -- a lot. And one feels as if a part of one's life has been washed away. I could feel all the pain in the words.

  7. Ah, development is erasing the memories only to create new ones, Indu. And we can never go back to the way it was.... no matter how hard we try, things are never going to be the same again. We must embrace the change as it is inevitable. A heart breaking reality, but.... c'est la vie!
    Lovely..lovely piece of writing!

    1. How do you do it?Without seeing the place you have nailed the reason. This home of mine was right in the heart of city, near Connaught Place & Bangla Saheb Gurudwara.Instead of our single story bungalows i saw ugly red apartments & the park in front too has been taken over.

  8. That was touching Indu ji

It tugged at the heart because I suppose we are all facing this change like Panchali has said --its all in the name of development and may be its inevitable and also good but the "'heart knows no reason'' and laments

your poem is nostalgia for all ---so many a times it has happened that we go back and ask for a certain eatery which we had frequented and which used to serve a certain speciality in ourtimes and the present crowd looks at you with a blank amused expression
life I suppose is like that.
    thanks for this
    regards

  12. Such lovely verses, such quaint sentiments! We moved out of the place where I spent my childhood around 10 years back, the houses, the road, the place, it is still the same, but all my neighbours moved away (it was government provided accommodation). No new occupants, desolate, the place which was so full life, now lays abandoned. What is the empty nest without birds...

  13. The greater the time elapse the stronger the shock because a lot changes with time.

Like you we too have moved out of our company's accomodation to our own house. That township is deserted & barren now.Yes the roads & houses are the same but that magic is missing.

  14. Loved the emotions these lines evoked, Indu.

I came across this visualization exercise during my studies and felt it was pertinent here. Try to visualize your neighborhood of your childhood in as much detail as you can, as if you were walking down to visit the place for real. See all the detail that you can recall. Walk towards your home or your favorite playground, the place where you spent the most time and cherish the most. Once you are there, see yourself as a child playing there. See the child notice you the adult watching. The child comes up to you and says...

  15. Thank you Subho for sharing this nugget with me.I love to visualize those scenes-it is as if those places continue to exist in another time frame. That was very thoughtful of you !

  16. Sometimes harsh reality dawns on us that some magic of the past can never be recreated ! Sigh!

  17. I always am happy whenever I recall those nostalgic moments. But after reading this poem, I felt.."wait, you are only recalling those moments right? that's why you are happy. If you go and face them, see them and things change, then you'll cry for sure". Things do change and it's hard to accept that.

  21. Wow.. that is a priceless rendition. Your words made my heart flutter. The memories of things that once were but now only reside in a corner of our hearts are very powerful. And it indeed is painful to go back to the place that had hosted our childhood and to see it any different that it once was.
