Happiness in this whirl-pool of social networking

social-network has many benefits. It keeps us busy and well informed. We come to know about the nuances of the world around us-what is in vouge and what is redundant.

But what does it do to our mind-set?Do we feel inferior, incompetent or isolated in this whirlpool?Does it leave us depressed or elated? This is one query which deserves pondering. After all our progress and achievements depend upon how we feel.

So here is a post about social-networking and happiness. Most of the chats on social media describe the owners' achievements, their special days and the likes or dislikes which they recieve.Viewed from a neutral vantage point, not all chats may be true or authentic. But they do have a lot of impact on our minds. In order to gauge our own status in this milieu let us consider our own behaviour first.

  1. Do we believe all the chats on the social-network as being 100% true and leave no space for our own judgement?
  2. Comparisons-Do we tend to compare our own status, achievements, friend circle and popularity with those of others?A friend might be good in developing social relationships but I may have some other talent.
  3. Are we ignoring real-time relationships and connecting only through  phone?
  4. Are we proactive?Do we    face problems as soon as they appear or do we dilly-dally and spend time on the social media to ease our minds?

According to Dalai Lama "Happiness is not something ready-made.It comes from our own actions".So here are a few pointers to guide us all:

Flexibility-Life may not follow the road-map laid down by you.Unforeseen events can pose  problems.Flexibility  alone can keep us sane.Even Lord Ram had to face a down-turn in his youth. He gauged the circumstances and acted accordingly.Ups and downs are a part of life. Those who lose courage after a set-back will not be able to correct their circumstances and find happiness.

Gratefulness=One discord or a negative event is only-THAT-one part of life.It does not eliminate other factors which are still working for you.Be thankful for them and take their help to move forward.

Rmination-Thinking all the time about how happy you were,or how in past everything  took place just the way you wanted it to;is no way to be happy.Obsessing about the negative events only causes misery.Rumination ruins happiness.

Negativity-We meet all kinds of people in life-some may be cheerful and positive while some others may always be obsessed because of their fears and tragedies.Associating with the second kind will overshadow your own cheerfulness.Shun them where possible.

Me-time-In the routine of daily life, find time to follow pursuits which make you happy.

Keeping the above elements in mind will save you from heartache so that you can tread your path and be happy.

Memories

A nebulous entity inside our mind-or maybe our brain-is mighty powerful. It controls so many fascets of our life which we think are happening due to our own volition, but at the stem is that same entity. All this-without even our knowing it.To cut a long story short-it is nothing but our own memory. As we all know, memory is the ability to retain and recall information. It plays a major role in our lives. It comes unannounced, uninvited, and then spreads it's net over us.

We may not realize, but it does decide whom we like and whom we keep at a distance. In this way it circuscribes our friendships and communities. It also circumscribes our comfort-zones as a result of our past activities, their outcomes and related experiences. Our memory of those experiences decides what to attempt and what to shun.

Another major function of memory is to help us pass time when we are lonely and have nothing to do.At such moments long forgotten/suppressed events or individuals come to the fore.If we recall happy incidents we shall be cheerful, rearing to go,repeat a simiar incident or connect with someone who was a part of that experience. On the other hand if we think about our failures, shocks, traumas or tragedies we shal be morose and woebegone. We must try to conjure those happenings which make us upbeat and positive.I wrote about a similar incident in "Association of Ideas" which signifies the actions of memories. In this way our memory constructs our moods and mind-set.Naturally this also shapes our personality.

Another way in which our memory functions is to help us plan our  future actions-naturally,since we would not like to repeat an error or a failure. That is not all-it also protects us from prospective dangers or mishaps.

Any talk of memory cannot but touch the factor of forgetfulness.Does our brain age as we grow old?Is Dementia inevitable? From a layman's point of view it is not so.The more we use our memory the sharper will it become.Use it as in--learning new skills, connecting with others, talking to them, solving puzzles, reading new articles etc etc.Try what appeals to you and improve your memory.

Here's wishing you good luck!

Pampering

Pampering as we all know, implies taking excellent care of someone and providing all that he or she needs. No doubt it is a very kindly service. But take it a bit far and it could turn into cosseting or mollycoddling, which is inimical for the rcipient as well as the doer. But how and where to draw the line?

Newborn babies or infants do need to be pampered but as and when they can accomplish small tasks, the caretakers should recede accordingly.Rather they should encourage initiative and selfreliance in them.Undue pampering can make them lazy, arrogant and demanding.Cosseted children are unable to shoulder their responsibilities, make way for themselves or face failure when they grow up.

Like infants, the ill, old, feeble,or those traumatised also deserve to be pampered. But even they should be motivated to pick up the reins if and when possible.Unnecessarily waiting bound hand-and-foot on them will in fact make them more feeble and despondent. If they give up all efforts to look to their daily necessities they will also age more rapidly.

Excessive pampering is not only bad for the receiver but also for the doer.It makes them gullible and exposes them to exploitation too.Predators will soon spot them and dupe them to achieve their ends.

Being kind and compassionate is fine, but overdoing it is harmful for both parties.
