Science in Rigved

This is my debut post on the speaking tree:----

These days i am reading the 'pratham mandal '( first volume) of Rig Ved as translated by Maharshi Dayanand.I have only read up to 'sukta 62' but it is enough to amaze me.It has opened for me a window through which i can glimpse the vast treasure of our ancestors' knowledge. In those days.....

  1. isn't it all amazing ----the facts --and the fact that our ancestors had all the knowledge thousands of years ago --that which we call discovery and science today -----our glorious past and how we lost it all due to greed, selfishness ----I dont know if you agree with me or not but selfishness according to me has been the writer of India's history
    thanks for this post
    warm regards

  2. Good morning Rajni!
No doubt selfishness has been our undoing--and a lack of national pride-otherwise how could so many tribes have come & enslaved us?
    Lots of love!

  3. That sounds great. Although I'm a Chaturvedi but I've not read anyone of them yet. I'm planning to read Rig Ved too.

  6. Very informative post. I feel all our rituals, Vedas, traditions etc have scientific meaning behind them. We need to understand those and follow.

    1. Thank you Ranjana.Perhaps the rituals too had meanings but they have dulled with time.

  16. Indeed we have a large treasure trove of knowledge in the vedas ! We need to find time to delve into it!

  17. Indeed time is a big constraint.

  18. Poetry, scriptures and the like are open to many interpretations. This particular interpretation is also likely to change after a few years or decades...

I remember one of my maths teachers starting a class on infinity with a shloka from Brihadaranyka Upanishad: "Poornamata, poornamitam..." I.e., "Infinity here, infinity there; take away infinity from infinity and infinity remains." He interpreted it to mean:"Infinity minus infinity is equal to infinity." He was teaching us the meaning of infinity in maths.

  19. This shloka means that if you take out the whole--i.e brahmand or cosmos--out of the whole--i.e the creator--the whole-which means the cause of creation remains ;which is complete in itself.

  20. It is treasure fullof knowledge.
But,are we really learning from Vedas? Are we teaching our children what our parents taught us?Will Vedas remain relevant to the coming generation?

  21. Very valid questions Chowla jee.Alas the young generation is focused on other things.
